Scramble to deleverage takes heavy toll on stocks

Politicians, archbishops and trade unions blamed short selling by speculators and hedge funds for bringing down banks and markets last month.

In hedge funds they had the right target - but short selling, or betting on price falls, was not the problem: it was just plain old selling.
