Brown defeats call for EU treaty vote

Gordon Brown fought off Conservative attempts to force him to hold a referendum on the new European Union Lisbon treaty on Wednesday night, clearing the way for Britain to ratify the controversial text before the summer break.

But a marathon 12-day Commons debate confirmed the toxicity of Europe as an issue for all parties and ended with significant rebellions by Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs who supported a referendum.
