Pyongyang 'split over nuclear talks'

North Korea's leadership appears divided over whether to move towards nuclear disarmament, the chief US negotiator said yesterday while expressing a degree of optimism that talks due to restart next week in Beijing would lead to a "first tranche" in the denuclearisation process.

Chris Hill, assistant secretary of state, said he thought some of North Korea's leaders "understand the need to move on" but that others had not made that "strategic decision".
