Top team signals end to ‘sofa’ style

Gordon Brown underlined his determination to break with the Blairite era of “sofa government” on Wednesday, announcing a symbolic change in the job title of his press spokesman as he unveiled his inner circle of senior staff.

The inclusion of senior Whitehall officials, alongside a cadre of loyal Treasury staff, in the prime minister’s core team is designed to signal a stronger role for the civil service in the new government.
