In Greek mythology, Chiron was a centaur and renowned physician who, accidentally wounded and unable to heal himself, surrendered his immortality so he could die in peace.

In real life, Chiron is a US biotechnology group, which, wounded by its own manufacturing problems, may be about to surrender its independence to Novartis. Whether it does so peacefully remains to be seen.
