Benefit squeeze fears for single parents

The government’s employment service is ill-equipped to help about 70,000 lone parents who over the next year will be required to look for work or risk a benefit cut, the single parents’ organisation Gingerbread said on Sunday.

From today new claimants whose youngest child is 10 or 11 will be put on Jobseeker’s Allowance – pushing up an already rising claimant count – rather than on income support.
