Berlusconi in climbdown over TV interview

Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister, caused an uproar in Italy’s election campaign on Wednesday by threatening to appear in an unscheduled television interview that risked breaking national election laws.

Mr Berlusconi dropped his plan to appear on Canale5, a channel owned by his Mediaset TV empire, after opposition politicians expressed outrage and Italy’s commercial TV regulator urged respect for the rules.
