Javier Solana, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, will restore high-level EU contact with Syria when he visits Damascus next week for the first time in more than two years.

The trip is designed to encourage Syria to help end the Lebanon political crisis, which pits pro-Syrian parties against a government supported by the west.
