Exchanges make hay while volumes soar

The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, otherwise known as Mifid, is a classic liberalising measure intended to increase competition across Europe's securities markets. The intensity of the competition depends to an important extent on how the big investment banks respond. Their response will also matter for the outcome of the cross border stock exchange mergers now under consideration.
