Turkish army on defensive over alleged plot

A row over a leaked document containing plans to undermine Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) has exposed the waning influence of powerful generals in political life.

In the week since the newspaper Taraf published the document, allegedly signed by a colonel in the general staff, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prime minister, has seized the moral high ground, pledging to uphold democracy against conspirators.
