Tories clash with business over jail size

Fresh divisions have opened up between business and the Conservative party over the future direction of an ambitious prison building programme being planned by the government.

The Tories on Wednesday renewed their attack on Labour’s plans to build three super-prisons – each with a capacity for 2,500 inmates – arguing instead for a network of smaller local establishments as a way of accommodating a steeply rising prison population.
