Emerging hopes for Barclays

Barclays is confident that the worst is behind its emerging markets commercial banking division, the only part of the bank to lose money in the first half of the year, a senior executive said.

The British bank’s emerging markets retail and corporate banking division, which operates in 14 countries, reported a loss of £86m in the first six months of the year, compared with a profit of £52m in the same period of 2008.
