When Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook founder, takes the stage on Wednesday at the social network’s second-annual developer conference in San Francisco, he will have an opportunity to put the shine back on a company that has lost some of its lustre in recent months.

The centrepiece of this year’s Facebook conference is expected to be a new technology called Facebook Connect, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.
