'Quant' funds shrug off concerns over returns and seek investors

Renaissance Technologies and DE Shaw, two of the biggest quantitative hedge fund managers, are raising money as they shrug off concerns over the poor performance of many computer-driven funds last month.

Long Island-based Renaissance, run by former maths professor and billionaire Jim Simons, is preparing to launch a "quant" fund next month that will trade futures. It estimates that the fund could run up to $50bn.
