LDP seeks moderate road to revival

Japan’s once-mighty Liberal Democratic party on Monday chose a mild-mannered former finance minister to lead it out of the political wilderness following its crushing defeat at last month’s general election.

The election of Sadakazu Tanigaki, 64, as the LDP’s new president represents a decisive rejection by its Diet members and local party representatives of the kind of dramatic generational and organisational change of the sort promoted by his two younger rivals for the post.
