Early failures force Thompson out of race

Fred Thompson, the senator-turned-actor once hailed as the man to unify the fractured US conservative base, has withdrawn from the Republican presidential race after a series of dismal results in early primaries and caucuses.

Many Republicans had hoped the 65-year-old would emerge as a viable alternative to John McCain, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, who have all struggled to unite the party.
