Dutch step in with €200bn guarantee

The Dutch government on Monday said it was guaranteeing interbank lending up to €200bn ($268bn, £160bn) as part of a plan by the eurozone economies to support the banking sector.

The government said it would provide the guarantee within days in order to tackle the liquidity problems that prompted it to nationalise the banking and insurance operations of Fortis in the Netherlands two weeks ago.
