The first defence minister in Japan’s post-war history quit on Tuesday after remarks suggesting the US could not be blamed for dropping nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of the second world war.

The resignation, the third in the disaster-prone cabinet of Shinzo Abe, prime minister, appears to have been engineered with the aim of dousing public anger before the ruling party goes into crucial upper house elections later this month.
