Delta cuts staff as it struggles to tie up deal with Northwest

Delta Air Lines yesterday said that it had offered early retirement to 30,000 employees, made steep cuts to its domestic flight schedule and parked as many as 45 aircraft.

The airline industry has been beset by a surge in fuel costs and the weakening US economy, with oil's march above $100 a barrel set to add more than $2bn to Delta's fuel bill this year.
