There is a hunt on for good songs of abuse. Premiership football resumes in England, which means nine months of fans around the country chanting insults at Manchester United’s winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo’s supposed crime was to get England’s Wayne Rooney sent off when Portugal faced England at the World Cup. Rooney arguably contributed to the dismissal by stamping on a Portuguese player’s genitals but English fans prefer to focus on Ronaldo’s word with the referee and his wink after Rooney was sent marching. It all seemed rather tactless given that Ronaldo and “Roonaldo” are team-mates at United.
