There’s nothing like a trip to an IT-free zone to remind you of the limits of technology. Visiting my parents recently, where a TV remote control device is considered an imposition from outer space, a few things struck me.

First, they live about a mile from a large town in a fair size village, yet of the four networks represented on the collection of mobile devices my family took with us for the weekend, only one could pick up a reliable signal.
