Osborne derides ‘Brown era’

Gordon Brown’s long-standing claim to the mantle of economic competence was mocked by his critics on Friday, after it emerged that Treasury officials were considering loosening his vaunted fiscal rules to allow higher borrowing.

On a day of bleak borrowing data, George Osborne, shadow chancellor, claimed the “Brown era of economics” was over, and that the government’s fiscal framework was now in tatters.
