Asia markets follow Wall Street plunge

Asia shares looked set for a gloomy end to the week and the first half of the year as New York shares tumbled overnight to near two-year lows and investors fretted about prospects for the US, a key export market. Oil jumped to a record of $140 a barrel overnight.

Japanese inflation almost doubled and household spending dropped, dragging the Nikkei down by more than two per cent to a two-month low.
