Merkel convenes summit to assess stimulus

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has summoned business leaders, economists and trade unionists to Berlin next week for talks on the severity of the downturn hitting Europe’s largest economy.

Government officials said the discussions would inform Berlin’s official 2009 growth estimate, which would be released by the economics ministry at the end of the month. They played down the likelihood that it could lead to a fresh round of growth-boosting measures.
