It was billed as Hillary Clinton’s most vulnerable moment so far in the 10-month-old presidential campaign. But the Democratic frontrunner, who joked that she had come in an outfit made of protective asbestos, comfortably survived Thursday night’s frequently acrimonious two-hour televised debate.
In a sign of growing tensions in the countdown to the critical January 3 caucus in Iowa, it was also the most personalised debate so far. “I don’t mind taking hits on my record, on issues,” Mrs Clinton said. “But when somebody starts throwing mud, at least we can hope that it is both accurate and not right out of the Republican playbook.”
