Australian opposition leader Latham resigns

Mark Latham’s turbulent political career came to an abrupt end on Tuesday when ill health forced the Australian opposition leader to step down after barely a year in the job and three months after he led Labor to a crushing defeat in October’s federal election.

While his resignation had been widely expected amid mounting concern over his leadership, the 43-year-old economics graduate shocked the political establishment by deciding to leave politics altogether.
