Faced with increasing pressure from the US and Europe, Iran is looking for friends closer to home and trying to reach out, in particular, to Saudi Arabia.

The visit to Riyadh last week by Mohammad-Reza Baqeri, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, follows talks in December between Ali Akbar Velayati, the envoy of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah.
