EU members vie for pivotal Brussels posts

Nominations for the next European Commission were almost complete on Monday, as Europe’s big countries continued to seek out the heavyweight economic portfolios.

Only three countries have yet to finalise their choices over whom they wish to put forward as their commissioners for the next five-year term. José Manuel Barroso, commission president, is expected to finalise the line up next week. But the European parliament is not likely to vet all the candidates until January at the earliest.
