A&L faces uncomfortable questions

Bradford & Bingley’s £400m ($792m) capital raising has overshadowed speculation about what might happen to its larger rival Alliance & Leicester.

Although four UK banks, including B&B, have been raising equity capital to repair their battered balance sheets, Alliance & Leicester has not. But speculation is intensifying that the company may have to cut its interim dividend to conserve capital.
