Abe opts for cabinet of veterans

Shinzo Abe yesterday named a cabinet of veterans in an effort to restore credibility to his administration after it suffered a massive defeat in last month's upper house elections.

Japan's struggling prime minister, who refused to follow precedent by resigning, has persuaded some heavyweights to join his cabinet, including Fukushiro Nukaga, 63, a possible successor, who takes over the finance portfolio.
