Opposition officials yesterday accused the ruling party of attempting to rig Zanzibar's elections, as police clashed with opposition supporters for a second day. Sunday's polls on the semiautonomous region of Tanzania, a darling of international donors, were marred by outbreaks of violence.
Yesterday, the opposition Civic United Front (CUF) alleged that 80,000 of its supporters were prevented from voting because of registration irregularities. The CUF also claimed results sheets, which should have been posted at polling stations after ballots were counted, were missing in many areas.
