Democratic struggle stresses faultlines

It might have been a cliché. But when Hillary Clinton recited the Emma Lazarus poem about America’s “tired and huddled masses” at her Super Tuesday rally in New York, she could have been describing her voter base.

Both Mrs Clinton’s and Barack Obama’s campaigns were yesterday still digesting the results of what was the US’s largest ever primary nominating vote to be held on a single day – with 24 states and two territories participating.
