When you first meet Clive Lloyd, it's not obvious what made him cricket's most successful captain. The Guyanese is not a charismatic speaker. He doesn't have a winning smile. He doesn't move with grace, like his successor Viv Richards. His stoop, famous in his prime, has worsened so that at 63 he walks practically folded double, taking the edge off that official height of 6ft 4in.
And yet nearly 25 years after Lloyd captained the West Indies, his old team-mates interviewed in Simon Lister's lovely new biography* remain awestruck. When Lister arrives late to interview Desmond Haynes, the great batsman reassures him: "I would have sat here all day for Lloydy."
