Politics: Novice DPJ obtains a mandate for change

At a street-corner speech in Japan’s northern industrial town of Muroran ahead of last month’s election, Miyuki Hatoyama, the impressively energetic wife of opposition leader Yukio Hatoyama, told a sparse crowd of voters they were at an historic turning point.

“This will be an election we remember as the time when Japan changed,” Mrs Hatoyama said.
