How Annan kept complex package from unravelling

On Tuesday evening in Ankara, Kofi Annan, the United Nations secretary -general, was just beginning to relax on the last stop of his frantic peacemaking tour of the Middle East.

He had organised a reception for his little team of advisers, organisers and security men, to thank them for racing through 10 countries in 10 days to rally support for the UN's Lebanon peace plan.
