Salmond blow as Scottish budget is rejected

The Scottish government’s £33bn ($46bn) budget for the coming year has been rejected, in the biggest parliamentary setback for the Scottish National party since it won power in 2007.

The result also dealt a blow to the political dominance of Alex Salmond, first minister and SNP leader, whose hopes of leading Scotland to independence have been dented by the crisis engulfing the country’s leading banks, RBS and HBOS.
