Blair allies in show of unity to Brown

Senior allies of Tony Blair have promised a smooth transfer of power to Gordon Brown as the Labour party tried to present a united front ahead of an expected drubbing in Thursday’s local elections.

John Reid, the home secretary, indicated on Sunday he no longer intended to challenge the chancellor for the Labour leadership, saying “there will not be a fracturing” at the top of the party.
