Brown keeps counsel on EU trade post

Gordon Brown issued a vote of confidence on Tuesday in Cathy Ashton, Britain’s European commissioner, but declined to say whether he would back the Brussels trade chief for a new term.

Brussels is bracing itself for its five-yearly round of horse-trading as member states jostle for top jobs, with Britain attempting to ensure that the European Union does not abandon its reform agenda or retreat into protectionism.
