The BBC and British government on Monday sought clarification on the fate of the kidnapped journalist Alan Johnston after an unknown Palestinian group in Gaza claimed it had killed him.

Officials said they could not confirm the claim by the Tawhid and Jihad Brigades, sent via e-mail to news agencies in Gaza on Sunday. The group said it would release a video of the killing.
