E Europeans battle to drive up currencies

Central European countries tried to bolster their faltering currencies on Wednesday after days of falls against the euro and dollar.

At the same time, Andrius Kubilius, the Lithuanian prime minister, said eastern Europe was being plunged deeper into recession by western Europe’s banking crisis and needed co-ordinated help from the European Union.
