Concern about return of ‘old demon' protectionism

Shortly after the result of France's referendum, Nicolas Sarkozy, leader of the ruling UMP party and presidential rival to Jacques Chirac, delivered a speech peppered with references to the need to protect French interests.

Although Mr Sarkozy is known as one of France's more “liberal”, or pro-free market politicians, he urged more “co-ordination of economic policy” to stimulate growth and job creation.
