Blair tells Brown he can speak out on policy

Tony Blair has given Gordon Brown the green light to speak out publicly on the full range of government policy between now and the impending Labour leadership contest, insisting there is no reason for the chancellor to keep his policy prospectus hidden from the public.

Over recent months, Mr Brown has been careful not to stray too far from his Treasury brief, believing it would be presumptuous to suggest he is the certain successor to Mr Blair.
