Record turnout caps gruelling campaign

Americans were awaiting results last night after voting in apparently record numbers in one of the most closely fought presidential elections in living memory.

Shortly after polls closed in a handful of eastern states, two traditional Republican strongholds, Indiana and Virginia, were said to be too close to call. A victory in either for Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate, would be a major blow to his Republican opponent John McCain.
