Silvio Berlusconi, the media mogul and former Italian prime minister, was plotting an April comeback to power last night following the collapse of Romano Prodi's centre-left government.

With opinion polls giving Italy's richest man a comfortable lead, Mr Berlusconi, 71, expressed confidence yesterday he had the support of coalition partners to form a government.
