Bomb kills top Afghan spy official

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowd near a mosque in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing at least 22 people, including one of the country’s top intelligence officers.

The death of such a senior figure underscored the fragility of the security situation at a time when tribal leaders are voicing growing anger at increasingly credible reports of attempts to rig presidential elections in favour of President Hamid Karzai.
