EU leaders remain divided over top jobs

European Union leaders gather for a high-tension summit on Thursday night divided over who should be appointed to two of Europe’s most important jobs and how the selection process should be carried out.

Fredrik Reinfeldt, prime minister of Sweden, which holds the EU’s rotating presidency, abandoned hopes of forging a pre-summit consensus on the nominations after conducting two fruitless rounds of consultations with the bloc’s 26 other national leaders. The decision “might take a few hours. It might take all night,” he said on Wednesday.
