Sharon's coalition collapses

Ariel Sharon's minority coalition effectively collapsed last night, when parliament voted 69-43 to reject the Israeli prime minister's 2005 budget bill on its first reading.

The Knesset defeat would normally prompt snap elections. Mr Sharon, however, was expected to pursue talks with the opposition Labour party on forming a new coalition in order to avoid any delay in implementing his plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip.
