Tensions over Colombia raid give way to embraces

Latin American leaders put an end to a spiralling crisis yesterday when the pro-US government of Colombia agreed to negotiate differences with Venezuela, Ecuador and Nicaragua.

A Colombian military strike last week against leftwing guerrillas inside Ecuadorian territory had sparked serious tensions, with both Ecuador and Venezuela mobilising troops to their borders with Colombia.
