Goldsmith 'persuaded' by US over Iraq

Britain's most senior law officer had extensive contact with senior US officials and lawyers in the run-up to the Iraq war as they sought to persuade him that the conflict would be legal even without a second United Nations resolution.

According to a former US official, Lord Goldsmith, attorney-general, met officials from the US state department, the Pentagon, the justice department and the White House during a visit to Washington in the month before the war.
