Poor still waiting for economic miracle

Her pink hat pulled down low against the steel-grey Soweto sky, Zama, a slight nine-year-old, braves the cold to hold her banner aloft: ”There will be no peace without development in Kliptown.”

A few hundred metres away across the main square of Kliptown, a district at the heart of the township inextricably linked with the downfall of apartheid, dignitaries and locals jostle to catch a glimpse of Nelson Mandela, as the man who led South Africa to liberation 14 years ago arrives for one of countless events to mark his 90th birthday.
